Have you given any thought to your New Year’s resolution for 2016? Amid pledged changes in fitness, cleanliness, timeliness, sociality, and beyond, many people turn to their careers as the focus of change. We propose the following for engineers looking to take a step up in their careers. Resolve to exceed these job seeker benchmarks for a better chance at finding your occupational utopia.

Resolution: I will create, update, and/or maintain my LinkedIn profile in 2016.

This resolution is guaranteed to connect you with a certain amount of engineering jobs. More importantly, it’s a great way to showcase who you are and connect with people who might be your next lead to a job. You can connect with us, too!

If you already have a steady LinkedIn profile, improve it by customizing your URL, changing up your photo, adding skills, and connecting with others. Don’t wait for former classmates or colleagues to find you!

Resolution: I will attend networking events and/or join career-relevant organizations in 2016.

Old-fashioned, face-to-face networking is huge. If you can get your business card and your personality out there where others can see them, you’ve done half the work. The job search is about who you know. Organizations are also a great addendum to your resume.

Pro tip: You can have business cards made which do not correspond to a role with a company, but rather your name and professional contact information.

Resolution: I will revamp my resume in 2016.

Speaking of resumes, is yours a half-page Times New Roman word document you’ve barely edited since undergrad? Inversely, is it an eight-page epic detailing every nuance of your career? Resumes should be sharp, to-the-point, and rife with only the details a potential employer would need.

Resolution: I will stop using a templated, generic cover letter in 2016.

This is extra work. You should assume any hiring manager would want to hire an employee who isn’t averse to extra work. They want to know you pay attention, and that your job search is important to you.
